Michael stepped inside Kyan’s playroom and took a moment to look around. With the hand-drawn woodland scene adorning the walls and every conceivable toy and stuffy on display, it looked like a Little’s paradise.

‘This could be at your place one day soon,’ Matteo said, putting his arm around Michael. ‘Benjamin’s a great boy. Kyan says he’s a wonderful friend too. I’d say he’s a keeper.’

‘You know, you might be right,’ Michael said, his heart melting at the sight of Benjamin and Kyan over in the corner, sipping on juice as they put the finishing touches to huge coloring projects. ‘But… is this the right life for him? I mean, no offence to you and Kyan. But I don’t know if it’s right to bring an innocent boy into this life.’

Michael looked at Matteo. He truly didn’t want to cause his cousin any offence whatsoever. But Michael couldn’t deny the truth that was standing right before them. They lived a dangerous life. It was a way of life that saw violence, death, cruelty, and Machiavellian plotting at each and every turn.

But if Michael was worried that his fellow gangster and cousin Matteo would take offence, then he was very much mistaken…

‘No, you’re right,’ Matteo answered, a knowing look in his eye. ‘Even now, I find myself wrestling with that dilemma late at night. But the heart wants what it wants. I know that Kyan loves me, and I love him. It would be crueler to deny that. Kyan might be a Little, but he’s smart as hell and knows his own mind. And from what I know of him, Benjamin is the same. All you can do is make the dangers know to him. Whatever he chooses will be his decision, and his decision alone.’

Michael could see that Matteo was being sincere. And he had a point too. Michael might not have known Benjamin for all that long, but he had certainly witnessed enough smart thinking and razor sharp sass to know that beneath his naïve exterior, he had full agency for his life choices.

And with that thought in his mind, Michael watched as Matteo called Kyan over and the two of them left the playroom, no doubt wanting to give Michael and Benjamin their time together.

‘I’ve got good news, baby boy,’ Michael said, walking toward Benjamin and taking a seat on one of the big, bright-yellow beanbags. ‘Come and sit with me.’

‘Okay, Daddy,’ Benjamin said, an innocent smile on his face as he crawled over in his electric-blue romper and clambered up onto Michael’s lap. ‘D-d-d-d-did you make the bad men go away?’

‘I did,’ Michael said, nodding and stroking Benjamin’s silky-smooth hair. ‘They won’t ever come back into Flowers on Fifth again. But we do need to talk.’

‘It’s not all over, is it?’ Benjamin asked, showing that even when he was in Little mode he was able to bring himself back into real life when important matters were at hand. ‘Can I go back to working there at least?’

‘Not yet, darling,’ Michael replied.
